Sport Specialization

Playing one sport year-round, to the exclusion of others.

The American Academy of Pediatrics defines it as intensive year-round training in a single sport at the exclusion of others, and advises delaying it until late adolescence. A meta-analysis of 51 studies found that athletes who reached the highest levels had typically started their main sport later and played more sports as children.
