Trinity Rodman

Forward · USWNT · Washington Spirit

Trinity Rodman is Dennis Rodman’s daughter, and she has described their relationship as a strained one. She built her own game at a top California club. When COVID canceled her freshman college season, she turned pro instead, went second in the 2021 NWSL Draft at 18, won Olympic gold in 2024 and in 2026 signed the biggest contract in the league’s history.

01The route, rung by rung

Every club, in order, with the years

Look at the years beside each rung. Several of them cover three or four seasons in one place, and the second-division USL turns up on four of these thirteen routes.

Rodman came up at the SoCal Blues, one of the country’s strongest girls’ clubs, and arrived in the draft as a club player rather than a college one. She was raised primarily by her mother; her relationship with her father has been distant.

The youth résumé here came from years on a serious club team, not from a famous last name.

She joined Washington State as a freshman in the fall of 2020, then COVID wiped out the Pac-12 season. In the Spirit’s own words when they drafted her, she "did not appear in any games for the Cougars."

She went second overall in the 2021 NWSL Draft at 18, won Rookie of the Year with seven goals and seven assists, and assisted the extra-time winner as the Spirit took the 2021 championship. A chronic back problem cost her most of 2025. In January 2026 she signed a three-year deal through 2028, reported as the largest in league history.

Skipping college worked because she was already good enough to go second in a pro draft. That’s the rare exception, not the plan.

The climb, up close

Her college season got canceled before she played a game. She turned pro instead.

The part worth reading is the order it happened in and how long each step took. Look at the years beside each rung above. Several of them cover three or four seasons in one place.

02Read it like a parent

What a parent can take from this one

A few things worth pulling out of the route above, none of them a formula you can copy.

The famous name is not the story

A last name gets a player looked at once. Going second in a pro draft at 18 is not something a surname does for you.

Club soccer did the heavy lifting

Years at a strong ECNL club, and no college games at all, built the player pro scouts wanted to draft.

Skipping college is the exception

It only worked because she was already pro-ready at 18. Most players still need the college route to be seen.

Plans break, paths bend

A canceled freshman season could have stalled her, and a back injury later cost her most of a season. Neither ended it.

One path, not the path. MLS NEXT alone holds more than 53,000 players across 318 clubs. MLS has 30 clubs and caps an active roster at 30 players, and a World Cup squad is 26. Trinity Rodman’s route is worth understanding rather than copying step for step, because the arithmetic between those numbers is not something a plan can beat. Here is where the odds actually land.

How we built this page

Every club, date and figure on this page was checked against US Soccer, the clubs themselves, college athletics departments and dated reporting. The professional record is well documented. The youth years are thinner, so where a claim could not be traced to one of those sources we cut it rather than fill the gap.
