A World Cup-winning goalkeeper called El Gato gives a career-ending interview and tells how a ghostly mentor taught him the game deep in the South American rain forest. A soccer story wrapped in a mystery, told as one long conversation.
Why we picked it
One of the best-written soccer novels for young readers and a good bridge into more grown-up books for a strong 12- or 13-year-old. Sits at the top edge of this age band.
