Fourteen-year-old Ahmed, a Syrian refugee alone in Brussels, hides in the basement of a house where a homesick American boy named Max lives. Max is failing school and scraping by on his soccer team, and the friendship the two build turns into a plan to keep Ahmed safe.
Why we picked it
Soccer is what Max has and what finally gives him something to offer someone else, so the sport carries the story instead of decorating it. One of the few genuinely well-written soccer novels for this age.
