Max wants a place on the village fútbol team and the birth certificate he needs to register, and neither his father nor his grandfather will explain why he cannot have the second one. Chasing the answer sends him across the country on a secret family errand.
Why we picked it
The book opens on tryouts and the paperwork problem that keeps a kid off a roster, which is a specific and underwritten thing. Pam Muñoz Ryan writes at Newbery level, so it reads beautifully aloud even though the middle stretch leaves the field.
