Narrated by Liev Schreiber, this HBO Sports film traces the U.S. women's team from the late 1980s through the 2004 Olympic gold. It centers on the players who built the program, including Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain, Julie Foudy, Kristine Lilly, Michelle Akers and Joy Fawcett. The 1999 World Cup win and its famous penalty-kick finish anchor the story.

Why we picked it

It is the origin story of the team most American girls grew up idolizing, told before the modern money and coverage existed. Young players see that these stars started as underpaid pioneers who kept going, a grounding counterpoint to today's polished highlights.
