In 1978 New Jersey, teenager Gracie Bowen loses her older brother and decides to take his place on the boys' varsity soccer team. She has to win over a skeptical school board, a doubtful coach, and her own father to prove she belongs on the field. The story is loosely based on the childhood of co-star and co-producer Elisabeth Shue.
Why we picked it
It is one of the few soccer movies built around a girl fighting for a roster spot, set just before Title IX reshaped the sport, so it opens an easy conversation about how far girls' soccer has come.
